Widen Your Knowledge In Diabetes
April 24th, 2009 by Jenn White
Today, more and more women are having ‘apple shape’ and storing excess fat in the abdomen, putting them more on risk of insulin resistant and four times more at risk of getting Type 2 diabetes.
If you are a woman and your waist is wider than 31.5 inches, you could need a test for diabetes. Two or more of the following risk factors could mean you have diabetes.
-
Are you overweight?
-
Are you over 40 years old?
-
Do you have any diabetes in your family history?
-
Are you a Black or South Asian origin?
Diabetes can lead to blindness, amputation, kidney failure, stroke and heart attack if not diagnosed. For men, it would be 37 inches or more.

The earlier diagnosis of diabetes will lessen the risk of complication. The main aim is to keep the blood glucose level normal. Diet, exercise and behavior modification reduce the likelihood of getting diabetes. Physical activities uses muscles that burn glucose and improves the insulin sensitivity in the tissues, half an hour of moderate intensive exercise is recommended by doctor.
When it comes to food, low glycaemic food take longer to make glucose level rise. A measure known as index (GI) can help you recognise low GI food such as bran, cereal, fruits and vegetables, etc. High GI food such as white rice, bread, etc.
